My Books

My friend Greg Freeman was leaving so it seemed appropriate to produce an anthology of some of the people we’ve had over the years who regularly attend WOL Woking events either live or on Zoom, which Greg is continuing despite having moved.

I produced this on KDP and ordered 50 copies which I then sent to 40 friends and asked them for a small contribution to the Samaritans. I’ve updated it so that’s it’s now published by the Woodener Press. It consists of 21 poems about my time working in Guilford. After work I went to London Road train station where I would meet a man called “Steve”. We fell into a routine of smoking a rollie together while “Steve” told me stories for a few minutes before the train came. I might have prevented his suicide if I had only talked more trouble to talk but I was also falling apart. I didn’t ask for any reviews but Carla Scarano D’Antonio in Write Out Lound (23/4/21 ) wrote ” His poems are characterised by keen observations expressed in striking fresh images that convey an unexpected view; revelations of sorts that always surprise the reader” and Sam Smith (The Journal #64) wrote “the poems deal with the desperate need for sex, fear of compulsions, dreads and a whole gamut of shames associated with random desires. The collection came across like a collaboration ‘twixt Cavafay and Whitman.”

I have 6 copies left of this which are available by emailing me. It’s about 4″x6″ and fit neatly into a pocket. The cover is by permission of Raul Cordero and it’s called “Per la vostra sicurezza” which is in a private collection, New York,. and the title has been taken directly from the writer Paul Potts, but he’s dead so I don’t have to credit it. I began writing the 34 performative love poems in 2015 because I was fed up of reading books with a dedication to their partner I wanted to write a book of poems directly addressed to Frances, my wife. The Lake (June 2018) “innovative verse format”, London Grip (April 2018) “an entertaining little book that delivers more than its small size might lead one to expect”. Magma (Spring 2018) “when language and form lock together, you are hit once again with the notion that there is little more powerful on the planet than love. I suspect this is the pamphlet I’ll be coming back to again and again.” The Journal (#53) “simple artistry: a remarkable achievement.”
